-Lorcan, after rescuing Grace

Lorcan Furey is a Vampirate, Midshipman of The Nocturne. He's the vampirate who rescues Grace after she and her brother are shipwrecked. During Grace's first week aboard The Nocturne, he keeps her locked inside her cabin for her own safety. He later swears "with the last of [his] breath" he'll fight to protect Grace from any harm.

Appearance[]

Described as having a handsome face with dazzling blue eyes, Lorcan appears 17 year old. He has jet black hair and dark eyebrows. He is described as wearing clothing that is typical of a sea-fairer. He almost always wears a special Cladagh ring where, instead of a heart, the hands are clasping a skull. He has long dark lashes and sharp cheekbones. He is pale, which enhances his rare beauty, like the translucent marble or the papery-violet-tinged skin of a garlic bulb.

Personality[]

Lorcan is very enigmatic, keeping a lot of his feelings close to his chest. Due to this, Lorcan tends to confuse people on how he feels about them. He has the habit of keeping others emotionally distant. He is strongly loyal, following through The Captain's orders without question, even if he is unsure about them. He's typically gentle in his mannerisms and speech, however when frustrated he is prone to lashing out and when he does, he doesn't seem aware of how hurtful what he says can be.

Lorcan comes off overprotective at first, but later it seems he's observant of things aboard The Nocturne that even The Captain isn't aware of.

Background[]

Not much is known about Lorcan's past other than the fact that he was born somewhere in Connemara, Ireland in 1803 and he died in Dublin in 1820. There is a strong possibility he was a sailor before he crossed, as he offhandedly remarks he remembers how to sail ships when talking to Grace. During Immortal War, Lorcan promises to tell Grace "the whole wretched tale" of his past at some point. He also revealed that he had a brother named Cathal.

Abilities[]

  • Swordsmanship: Lorcan is a skilled swordsman, favoring the rapier in combat.
  • Sailing: He is an adept sailor, having been a pirate for many years.
  • Claddagh Ring Manipulation: He's able to manipulate his Claddagh ring, such as making it hot or extending the skull's fangs.
  • Strength: He has supernatural strength like all vampires.
  • Speed: He has supernatural speed like all vampires.
  • Control: By not overindulging, he is able to control his bloodlust compared to vampires like Sidorio.

Weaknesses[]

  • Daylight: Like all vampires, he cowers in fear of the sun because it causes great pain.
  • Blindness: He was unable to see for a period of time after spending too long in the sun.
  • Diet: Due to his limited consumption of blood, he is not as strong as vampires that regularly feast.

Relationships[]

Grace Tempest: Lorcan and Grace meet when he rescues her from drowning. Throughout her first stay aboard The Nocturne, Lorcan is the only person Grace has direct contact with. This leads to her growing a reliance on him of sorts, and growing frustrated with him keeping her under lock and key. Despite this, Lorcan proves he has a knack for calming Grace down. Lorcan and Grace's relationship quickly becomes complicated once Grace leaves for The Diablo. While Grace is desperate to help and return to Lorcan, he grows somewhat cold to her, insisting that she's safer in the world of pirates than vampires. Grace ignores his warnings, and Lorcan becomes conflicted with his growing feelings for her. After revealing the entirety of the twins past to Grace, Lorcan kisses her and the two officially become a couple. At the end of Blood Captain, he admits he has "the strongest of feelings" for her, but he doesn't clarify until the final book, Immortal War, that he loves her.

Cheng Li[]

She finds him beguiling, and even flirted with him.

Trivia[]

  • He's fan of Darcy's singing and even listens to a record of hers in Tide of Terror
  • It's unknown whether he or The Captain delivers Grace's food in Demons of the Ocean
  • He's the only vampire to not have killed his donor, but to have two seen throughout the series (Shanti and Oscar).

Etymology[]

  • The name "Lorcan" means "Little; Fierce", it's also a name with a lot of history: the patron saint of Dublin and many high-kings of Ireland have had the name
  • His surname "Furey" was a last name typically given to workers who made horse equipment
