Grace Tempest is a protagonist of the Vampirates series. She is fourteen years old and the twin sister to Connor Tempest. The story begins as the two leave their home after their father's death.
Appearance[]
Grace is bony and described as "thin and rakey", with long auburn hair and bright, piercing emerald green eyes, which both her and her brother inherited from their mother. Another attribute Grace inherited from her mother is her light freckles, the two look like mirror images of each other.
As of Tide of Terror, Grace wears a silver locket around her neck, which was a gift from Connor.
Personality[]
Grace's main feature is her intelligence. Intensely curious by nature, she's brave enough to seek out the answers to her countless questions, even if it means confronting the intimidating Vampirate Captain or vicious Sidorio. However, her bravery can quickly turn into foolhardiness, much to the distress of those trying to protect her.
She can be opportunistic, not hesitating to leave her cabin aboard The Nocturne when Lorcan forgets to lock the door behind him, for example. Grace is very optimistic. She has the tendency to be impatient, especially when her questions aren't answered in a satisfactory way.
Naturally curious, Grace is fearless and as tough as an old boot, never giving up. She is mentally strong, and has a knack for reading people.
Background[]
Raised in Crescent Moon Bay alongside her brother by Dexter Tempest, Grace and Connor grew up in the town's lighthouse. The pair of twins were especially close and both were seen as misfits in their small town. Dexter encouraged both Grace and Connor to live life as they pleased and to grow into themselves as individuals. Ever since they were children, he would sing them the Vampirate Sea Shanty in order to calm them down whenever they were upset.
After Dexter's death, Grace and Connor were left penniless. They were given two options: to resign themselves to living in the Crescent Moon Bay Orphanage or live under the restrictive bank manager, Lachlan Busby, and his wife. Not wanting either, the twins decide to take their chances and leave town on Dexter's small boat Lousiana Lady. After a terrible and sudden storm, the twins were separated and the boat sunk. Grace was rescued by Lorcan Furey who brought her aboard The Nocturne.
During her first few days aboard the ship, Grace is kept under lock and key in the cabin beside The Captain's for her safety. Being cooped up inside the cabin, Grace grows frustrated despite enjoying Lorcan's presence. She spends a lot of her first few days aboard The Nocturne sleeping, worrying about Connor, and asking Lorcan questions that he doesn't always answer. Eventually, The Captain gifts Grace a vision of Connor aboard The Diablo, but the confused Grace mistakes the message to mean that she's dead. Worried for her safety, Lorcan ends up accidentally oversleeping in her cabin, which leads Grace to find out he's a vampire.
Initially disturbed that she's on a ship full of vampirates, Grace demands to see The Captain for herself.

Relationships[]
Lorcan Furey[]
Lorcan fished Grace out of the ocean and since then the two grew close. During her first stay on The Nocturne, Lorcan is Grace's sole companion. Despite her growing frustration with him dodging her questions, Grace found herself beginning to trust him deeply. Grace begins to fall for Lorcan rather quickly, but from Lorcan's end their relationship was much more complicated. Due to his conflicted emotions, Lorcan pushes Grace away, causing her to question everything they'd been through. At the end of Blood Captain, Lorcan eases her mind by confessing he has strong feelings for her. The two start dating around the end of Black Heart, romance and love increase throughout the rest of the series. Lorcan cares deeply for Grace, nuturing her and looking out for her, Grace feels and does the same back, looking out for him and being there for him.
Darcy Flotsam[]
Despite being very different from each other, Grace and Darcy get along famously. Grace, being eager to ask questions, and Darcy, loving to talk. Many clothes Grace wears throughout the series are hand-me-downs from Darcy. They grow a strong bond as the series continues, always there for each other as a friend or 'like sisters'.
Cheng Li[]
While at the Pirate Academy, Grace grows to trust Cheng Li and her listening skills. Knowing that talking about the vampirates upsets Connor, Cheng Li becomes Grace's sole confidant. Unknown to Grace, Cheng Li believes that Grace is suffering from stockholm syndrome the entire time they discuss.
